In an industrialized country where marriage is valued above other family forms, married students at an undergraduate institution are still a minority, contrary to the ‘Ring by Spring’ attitude at some colleges like AU. The vast majority of college undergraduates are unmarried, and this unreadiness to take the plunge could be based on personal beliefs as well as statistical facts pertaining to the marriage of individuals while in college. Amrutha Pulikottil, a senior majoring in … [Read more...]

A total of 122 bouquets of daffodils and 18 gifts of hope were hand-delivered to students on campus last week by the team of students from Relay for Life and their faculty sponsor Dr. Virginia Chapman. Huntoon, Standek play for concert series

Music is like writing—you cannot expect it to be a distant ambition. It requires daily practice and dedication to hone the skills. Each semester, the AU School of Music presents its concert series to showcase featured guest artists and allow faculty to wield their instruments with skilled precision. On March 1, John Huntoon, assistant professor of music and director of low brass at AU, performed the second recital of the series on trombone. He has spent a year preparing for the … [Read more...]
Student teams face CAB food challenge
The latest sporting trend is back on campus—competitive eating is here. Before dismissing it as a sport, professional competitive eating should be separated from no-hands pie-eating contests often associated with the sport. The necessary willpower and intensity, coupled with the ability to eat a dangerous amount of food in a short stipulated time, makes competitive eating a sport for kings. For the third consecutive year, CAB is hosting the Man v. Food event where teams of four are … [Read more...]
Swindell to retire from teaching

Retirement is a word that could mean different things to different people, and those ideas can change over time. As Dr. Linda Swindell, chair of the psychology department, retires this May after 18 years of service at AU, she intends to approach retirement with a Christian interpretation instead of a cultural one. “It is dismal to think of it as the end,” said Swindell. “It is a closing on part of my life, but it is not the end. I should make it a beginning as well.” Having … [Read more...]
Claiborne to speak at chapel

International key leaders are invited to AU to lead the series, which is a follow-up to fall semester’s Spiritual Emphasis Week (SEW), which focused on inward spiritual formation, transformation and renewal. This year, Shane Claiborne, author of … [Read more...]

Foodcart speeds meal time

Do not let the long lines at Hartung foodcart intimidate you. During one recent lunch, it only took six minutes to get through a 15-person line. Quick, convenient and efficient are the best words to describe the Hartung foodcart, the latest addition to the dining options in AU. Though the Hartung foodcart opened its doors only a few weeks ago, the food service already attracts a bevy of regulars. Steven May, director of food services and chef, explained that the new dining service has … [Read more...]
‘Sweet Breathing of Plants’ comes to AU

To Jennifer Rosengarten, art has always been a form of questioning and figuring out subjects. Students, faculty and invited guests attended the opening reception at the Jessie C. Wilson Galleries on Sept. 10. Tai Lipan, director of exhibitions programming, chose … [Read more...]
