eSports club connects online gamers on campus
Gamers are not always a close-knit bunch. The days of huddling around the four-controller port console for split-screen sessions of Mario Kart and Goldeneye have been dying a slow death. The temptation often exists to isolate oneself in the world of gaming and make the act of gaming a one-person experience that eschews social interaction for cold, emotionless interaction with a console or computer. Multiplayer is now an online function that often puts the gamer in a situation of isolation, … [Read more...]
Brit bands can be the best
On Sat., April 9, I drove three hours to Columbus, Ohio for a concert. Playing at the show were The Kills, The Joy Formidable, BAIO, and Everything Everything. I had only heard of one of these groups, and had driven this entire way only to see the latter. Everything Everything are a four piece alternative rock band from Manchester that rarely play in the U.S., so I saw it as a golden opportunity. Frontman Jonathan Higgs was both on key and on point, with his near universal use of head voice … [Read more...]
Student United Way concert raises money for local children
Last Friday night, April 1, Student United Way hosted a concert to benefit the United Way Born Learning program, which promotes the education of children under the age of six in Madison County. The Five Saxes, Luke Stafford and Overtime supplied the entertainment for the evening. Raffle baskets full of items from the community were offered, with a grand prize of dinner with President Pistole. Gordon Housman, who plays bass in Overtime, said that he enjoyed being part of an event that helps the … [Read more...]
Dr. Frank delivers brown bag lecture on US Constitution
“My words were taken out of context.” These are the famous words of every politician in the modern era who makes a gaffe, saying something offensive, bigoted or, in many cases, simply embarrassing. Seldom, however, are the words of these politicians any less offensive, bigoted or embarrassing in the proper context. But what happens when the Constitution, the foundation on which many of our laws are based, is taken out of context and used to justify the goals of politicians in the modern era? … [Read more...]
Senate hosts event to call for student interaction
Every Wednesday at 6 p.m. during the school year, Student Senate, a subsidiary of the SGA office, meets to discuss issues facing the student body. More often than not, this comes down to budget concerns for the committee, but also for the approval of the formation of clubs of all shapes and sizes. The senate also meets to discuss budgetary concerns of the individual clubs. While having a small budget to work with, they have the final say on allocating funds to each group. They also receive … [Read more...]
The death of the professional critic
The third anniversary of Roger Ebert’s death will be this April. The impact that he had on the world of film criticism, and in the general audience’s response to it, is incalculable. I remember, as a child, that unforgettable tagline attached to critically acclaimed movies: “‘Two thumbs up!’ – Siskel and Ebert.” After Gene Siskel’s death, it became Ebert and Roeper. Though the partnership had changed, that praise began to represent films that I cherished as a child, and that shaped my view of … [Read more...]
