Retirement is a word that could mean different things to different people, and those ideas can change over time. As Dr. Linda Swindell, chair of the psychology department, retires this May after 18 years of service at AU, she intends to approach retirement with a Christian interpretation instead of a cultural one. “It is dismal to think of it as the end,” said Swindell. “It is a closing on part of my life, but it is not the end. I should make it a beginning as well.” Having … [Read more...]

Orange, Black & Green rebrands

Tosha Ireland and co-president Matthew Bursley will change their club’s name to Keep AU Beautiful. (Photo Provided)

AU’s interest club Orange, Black & Green has been active for many years as the campus’ environmental club, but there could be drastic changes coming to the club in the near future, including a completely new name and rebranding. Long considered a “recycling club” by many students, the club pursues a broader scope of activities outside of simply recycling. However, Orange, Black & Green has seen sparse participation, and that has led them to reconsider how they go about their … [Read more...]

GAP provides new student services

Students participate in a new group for those struggling with addictions or brokenness. (Photo: Cristian Sandoval)

It takes guts to be a pioneer for some sort of group or cause, but that is exactly what a handful of students and faculty members have done at AU. Led by Lisa Pay and Libby LaLande, a new group called the Grace Acceptance Process (GAP) has been formed as a recovery-based group to assist students on campus who have struggled with addictions or brokenness. The idea of the GAP is to bridge the gap that seemingly exists between the discipline process and counseling services. “I feel like the … [Read more...]

Author of ‘Love is an Orientation’ visits

Sharing love: Marin strives to bridge the gap between the church community and LGBT community. (Photo Provided)

In the eyes of the general public, the relationship between the Christian and LGBT communities leaves much to be desired. In fact, multiple surveys about perceptions of Christian attitudes have shown that the church and its members are believed to be anti-homosexual. Such stereotypes are fueled by the Westboro Baptist Church’s notorious ‘God Hates Fags’ campaign and other extremist religious groups. Andrew Marin is a man who is trying to bridge this gap, and he will speak at AU … [Read more...]

Cochran realizes attainable artistic goal

AU student Stephanie Cochran recently had the unique opportunity to represent her school in the Indiana Glass Artists Association Show. She received fourth place and sold both of her pieces. As a School of Adult Learning (SOAL) student, her road to AU was not typical. Cochran grew up in Noblesville, Ind. where her grandfather collected art. “My family has a history of collecting it,” she said. “It was almost a museum setting in a lot of ways.” She pursued a career in special … [Read more...]

Twitter becomes new AU forum

Students tweet about chapel. (Photo: Julia Smith)

AU students are tweeting. With the use of a “hashtag,” AU students have started their own trends on Twitter, and tweets about chapel and “AU’s problems” are now trending among AU students. A hashtag is created with the number symbol (#) followed by a word or phrase. The hashtag categorizes the tweet and creates a link, which sends the user to a page displaying every account that has tweeted with the use of the identical hashtag. AU’s most popular trend is about chapel—seen on … [Read more...]

Bound for freedom

Bound, the on-campus ministry devoted to ending the terror of human trafficking, has grown to become a productive force through many service projects, including some aimed at the Super Bowl. Bound has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Originally, it was formed by a small group of students who wanted to discuss the problem of human trafficking. They put an advertisement in stall talk last year asking for any other participants. The ad attracted a lot of attention, which led to the … [Read more...]

Weighing in on SOPA, PIPA bills

On Jan. 18, 2012, anyone who went to Wikipedia was greeted not with its usual front page, a portal to millions of encyclopedic articles, but instead with a simple message asking the reader to “Imagine a world without free knowledge.” This, Wikipedia claimed, would be the consequence of the passage of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA). These bills, the page claimed, would “fatally damage the free and open Internet.” Other sites, including … [Read more...]
