All-Conference honors given to athletes

With HCAC basketball in the books for the 2011-12 season, the conference has announced its All-Conference men’s and women’s teams, honoring the best players this season. Three Ravens received the honor. Junior Phil Hogan was named to the men’s First Team and senior Brock Morrison was given Second Team honors. AU in sixth place for Commissioner’s Cup

With just the spring season remaining, AU Ravens’ sports currently sits in sixth place for the HCAC Commissioner’s Cup with 50.5 points. The Cup, first awarded in 2005-06, is a rotating trophy that is given to the institution that garners the most overall all-sports’ points during the year. The Ravens won the trophy in 2006-07 with a total of 92.5 points. The only schools besides AU to win the trophy are Manchester, Rose-Hulman, Transylvania and Franklin. Season comes to a close in HCAC semis

The 2011-12 season has come to a close for the AU Ravens men’s basketball team after they lost in the semi-finals of the HCAC tournament on Saturday afternoon. AU finished the year with a 10-8 record in conference, which was good for fifth in the HCAC, and a 15-12 record overall. The team traveled down to Lexington, Ken. to play in the conference tournament this past weekend, and they came away with one win and one loss. Six meets into the indoor track season, the AU men’s track team has won its fair share of events. Sophomore sprinter Tony Johnson has looked fantastic so far, finishing no lower than third in the 60-meters and recording three top-ten finishes in the 200-meters. Johnson’s 60-meter time of 7.01 seconds on Feb. 11 is the fastest time in the HCAC so far this year. He followed that up two weekends ago with a time of 7.02. Alex Friske is a name that’s worth remembering. When it comes to the 60-meter hurdles or the 200-meters, there may not be a better women’s track athlete in the conference. With the indoor track season officially over, Friske finished the season with six first-place finishes. Four of those came in the 60-meter hurdles, an event in which she currently owns the HCAC record for a time of 9.15 seconds. At the conference championships, she also won the 200-meters. Here is a strange thought for any AU basketball fan: imagine the team next year with no Brock Morrison or Andrew Bowman on the court. It will seem strange when the Ravens take the court for the first time in 2012-13 and neither player’s name is called for starting lineups. For the past three seasons the two have played together, and fans have become accustomed to watching them pursue every rebound and score 15 points almost every night out. With a 55-43 defeat at Mount St. Joe’s on Saturday, the AU women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end. The team finished 8-17 and ninth place in the HCAC with a 5-13 conference record. They had a tough schedule at the end of the season and lost their last five games after picking up two huge wins at the start of the month. Ravens lock up fifth seed

When the dust finally settled and the HCAC standings were set in stone, the AU men’s basketball team had secured the fifth place spot, which qualified them for the conference tournament. After splitting their final two games of the season, the team finished 14-11 overall with a 10-8 conference record. Soccer honored with postseason awards

The AU men’s soccer team was recently recognized with two prestigious awards. The team won its third Ethics/Sportsmanship Award, which was handed out at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention. The Association gives this highly respected award to only eight teams. The Ravens were one of three teams to win the Silver Award which recognizes teams with no red cards and no more than five yellow cards. AU finished the season with only four yellows. Ravens make late season surge

It is a common notion that a team wants to improve as the season goes on, ideally playing their best ball at the end of the season. The AU men’s basketball team is doing just that, evidenced by their current four-game winning streak, which included two more wins on the road this past week.
