October 5, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Clowns have been in the news a lot lately—specifically, creepy ones. In fact, many creepy clown photos and videos currently going viral on social media are being shared as if they are separate events in several different states. Nonetheless, creepy clowns have actually begun popping up throughout the U.S. Simply searching … [Read more...]

People are not skittles

September 28, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Fairly recently, the son of Presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted his opinion on whether or not the U.S. should allow Syrian refugees into the country. In the tweet, he compared possible terrorists disguised as refugees as poisoned skittles in a bowl of non-poisoned ones, posing the question, “If there were three poisoned skittles in the bowl, would you risk eating a handful?” Of course, with the possibility of potentially consuming a poisoned candy, it would be incredibly dangerous to … [Read more...]

Tragedy harms all Americans

September 14, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

As the fifteenth anniversary of the September 11th world trade center attacks has come and gone, we remember those who died and those who suffered great loss. More than 3,000 people died in the attacks and countless others felt the effects of the tragedy. For many, the attacks were a turning point in Americanhistory: security tightened, allegiances were formed, and newfound hatreds and prejudices were born. Suspicions arose, particularly of those who shared a common appearance with the group … [Read more...]

Drinking is still against the rules

April 24, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Recently, there was a “drinking party” broken up by campus police that involved members of Camarada and Dativus. Most of the students involved were seniors, but nonetheless, AU policy was broken. It’s almost the end of the year, and seniors are bound to be restless for the freedom outside of AU. That said, seniors are no more exempt from campus policy than underclassmen. People who come to AU should be aware that drinking is prohibited while on campus, when underage or, in recent history, not … [Read more...]

Being positive about body positivity

April 24, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

On April 1, Aerie, whose parent company is American Eagle Outfitters, released a photo campaign featuring men of diverse body types called “#AerieMAN.” This campaign was taken seriously and lauded by many on the internet as a positive campaign to include men of body types other than the usual super-fit models. That is, until the campaign was revealed to be a parody of the company’s own “#AerieReal” campaign, which included the company’s promise not to retouch any of the models for their … [Read more...]

Listen when people speak

March 2, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Chapel on campus is known to have a wide variety of topics and formats throughout the semester, which allows for students to experience different types of worship and gives students the opportunity to hear messages that they might not seek out for themselves. In chapel last Thursday, PACT organized an informal interview with a Muslim woman as the message. While many students appreciated the opportunity to hear the perspective of a Muslim woman about her faith, others were less than … [Read more...]

Responsibility as a viewer

February 18, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Last week in chapel, Professor Lisa Pay spoke about pornography addiction. Pay spoke openly about the effects of pornography addiction and cited research about its harmful effects on the psyche and on relationships. She said that porn is for masturbation, while art is for appreciation. In the United States, pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry. The industry grew substantially with the advent of the Internet and video streaming. And, while the viewing of porn has become commonplace and … [Read more...]

Valentine’s Day is about more than romantic love

February 11, 2016 by Andersonian Staff

Valentine’s Day tends to be a day of extremes—if you don’t love it, then you probably hate it. In the weeks leading up to Feb. 14, stores become overrun with giant stuffed animals and boxes of various candies and chocolates. Many people, especially those who aren’t in favor of Valentine’s Day, begin to make snarky comments about the holiday, while those who love it begin to wonder what the day will bring. The stereotypical Valentine’s Day for a single person looks lonely, dreary and depressing. … [Read more...]
