The Andersonian staff stands in support of the administration’s decision regarding budget cuts that were announced two weeks ago. Though the university as a whole will undoubtedly feel the loss of these valuable faculty and staff members, we understand that in order to move forward and stabilize our position as a university, certain cutbacks had to be made. We are sad to see many beloved staff and faculty members leave AU due to the cuts, and we sympathize with those whose athletic and academic … [Read more...]
Don’t fall trap to the social media echo chamber
If I were to ask your parent how they like to get their news, there is a large chance they would say television. While most Americans can identify bias on the television news networks we are all familiar with, new media can become harder to see through because it takes time to get used to and to fully understand. One such new media is the internet. Since its commercial release in 1995, the internet has been constantly evolving and adjusting to fit its place in society. The rise of social … [Read more...]
The worth of each and every person
A few years ago, during my freshman year, there were two seniors from the psychology department who presented their project to people in the Fair Commons lobby. I don’t remember the exact words they used, but the general idea of their presentation was “Where do you find your worth?” They spoke about different things that give people a sense of worth and purpose: grades, athletic ability, relationships, etc. and how all of these things are unstable in some way: you can perform poorly on a test, … [Read more...]
Just clowning around
Clowns have been in the news a lot lately—specifically, creepy ones. While many stories that have been shared in the world of social media claiming that “creepy clowns” have invaded yet another town, most of the stories have no factual basis. In fact, many creepy clown photos and videos currently going viral on social media are being shared as if they are separate events in several different states. Nonetheless, creepy clowns have actually begun popping up throughout the U.S. Simply searching … [Read more...]
Loving across long distances
It’s fairly common in sitcoms to hear characters joke about the failure rate or pointlessness of a long distance relationship. The show How I Met Your Mother described them as “a lie teenagers tell each other to get laid the summer before college,” as well as “all talking and no sex.” In most media, characters generally prefer to end their relationship over pursuing a long distance relationship, and if they do choose to stay together, it ends poorly; usually with one of the characters cheating … [Read more...]
People are not skittles
Fairly recently, the son of Presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted his opinion on whether or not the U.S. should allow Syrian refugees into the country. In the tweet, he compared possible terrorists disguised as refugees as poisoned skittles in a bowl of non-poisoned ones, posing the question, “If there were three poisoned skittles in the bowl, would you risk eating a handful?” Of course, with the possibility of potentially consuming a poisoned candy, it would be incredibly dangerous to … [Read more...]
Debating ethical meat consumption
I remember watching Pulp Fiction with several of my friends late in the first semester of my freshman year. In a profanity- laden opening sequence, Samuel L. Jackson’s character asks to try a bite of the Big Kahuna Burger sitting on the table in front of him. Taking a bite, Jackson exclaims, “Mmm! This is a tasty burger! I do love the taste of a good burger… My girlfriend is a vegetarian, which pretty much makes me a vegetarian.” My friends laughed and elbowed me at this point in scene. My … [Read more...]
Tragedy harms all Americans
As the fifteenth anniversary of the September 11th world trade center attacks has come and gone, we remember those who died and those who suffered great loss. More than 3,000 people died in the attacks and countless others felt the effects of the tragedy. For many, the attacks were a turning point in Americanhistory: security tightened, allegiances were formed, and newfound hatreds and prejudices were born. Suspicions arose, particularly of those who shared a common appearance with the group … [Read more...]
Underrepresentation in the media
I’ve had many discussions over the past few years about the idea of female-led movies, especially female superhero movies. Most of these discussions have been between me and one or more male friends or relatives, and usually involve me saying that I’m glad that female-led movies are happening, and them explaining to me why female-led movies aren’t important or aren’t as good as their male-led counterparts. It’s incredibly frustrating for me to hear people who have never had to deal with media … [Read more...]
Tips for if Trump or Clinton become President
We all know the thought of a Trump presidency makes us literally pee in our pants. (Or is that just me? Maybe I should get that checked out.) Anyways, I have compiled some great and helpful tips for if the phrase “President Donald J. Trump” is ever a thing: Move to Canada? No—don’t be a wimp! Move to Antarctica. That’ll really show him. Call the White House’s phone number and ask to speak to President Trump so many times that they’ll have no choice but to transfer your call to him. I hear … [Read more...]
