November 13, 2017 by Alec Brown

After three seasons at the helm, Anderson University Head Football Coach John Sala will not be returning. Sala led the Ravens to a 4-26 record in his time on the AU sideline. Athletic Director Marcie Taylor confirmed that Sala will not be returning, but had no further comments at the time. The team learned of the move in a team meeting Monday afternoon. Many were emotional upon hearing of the decision. “I didn’t see this coming,” said Alphonso Blackwell. “It’s sad because we all had a … [Read more...]

BROWN’S BREAKDOWN: Huge year in store for Ravens

November 1, 2017 by Alec Brown

Every once in a while, I’ll hear a student mutter something like, “Yeah, AU is awesome, but I just wish we had the athletic events that big schools do,” or “there’s just not much to go to on the weekends.” Sure, AU may not have a Kyle Field that seats 102,733 people for an SEC football game. What Anderson does offer is historic O.C. Lewis Gymnasium, a 1,738 seat arena that was renovated this offseason. And if you’re looking for something to do around campus this winter, look no further than … [Read more...]

Women’s soccer hunts conference championship

November 1, 2017 by Alec Brown

For the first time since the 2003 season, the Anderson women’s soccer team will be competing in post season play. A 5-2-2 conference record was good enough to take home fourth place in the HCAC, earning the team the final spot in the conference tournament. “When you look back and see all this team has accomplished this season, it’s been unbelievable,” said AU coach Jennifer Myhre. “Their goal set in January was to be in the top four and they worked tirelessly and for each other since then … [Read more...]

Season one of intramurals draws to a close after massive changes

October 18, 2017 by Alec Brown

After four weeks of competitive regular season play, the intramural playoffs have come and gone, bringing an end to season one of AUIMs. “It was a huge success,” said Trent Palmer, director of student engagement. A successful first season was hardly a sure thing. There was a great deal of anxiety surrounding this season coming in. After much of last year’s staff were unable to return for a variety of reasons, five new staff members were hired, a much greater deal of turnover than was … [Read more...]

The victory was the first of the conference season for the Ravens. After a slow start, a common occurrence for the team, the Ravens did a great job of closing out each set to secure the … [Read more...]

Since the last issue, women’s soccer kicked off the conference season with back-to-back wins before falling to Hanover on Saturday. Preseason conference favorite Hanover proved too much in a hard-fought 1-0 road defeat. The Ravens entered on a seven-match stretch without a loss. Baseball participates in Orange and Black Series

October 11, 2017 by Alec Brown

Each year, the Anderson baseball team wraps up their fall ball season with the Orange and Black Series. The tradition is a favorite amongst coaches, players and AU students alike. In year’s past, a captain was appointed to “Team Orange” and a captain to “Team Black.” The captains would alternate picks, each drafting a team comprised of one-half of the baseball roster. Under new Head Coach Mathew Bair, the series was held under a slightly different format this year. The entire program met … [Read more...]

Brown’s Breakdown: The healing power of sport

October 11, 2017 by Alec Brown

Tommy Tomlinson, an ESPN staff writer, penned this in a column on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11: “The sports we love are not a dip into the waters of Lourdes. They’re a bandage, a salve, a plaster cast on a broken arm. They don’t heal us by themselves. They give us protection and time so we can heal on our own. “You know how a great book can consume you so fully that you get lost in the world between the covers? A great game—or even just a great sports moment—can do the same thing. It … [Read more...]

September 27, 2017 by Alec Brown

After defeating Earlham in the first HCAC game of the season, the football team looked to steal a road win against Hanover. The Ravens got out of the gates quickly, jumping ahead 7-2  on  Johnny  Ovalle’s one-yard rushing touchdown. The scoring plunge was set up by an Alex Dickey interception that gave the Ravens the ball at the Hanover one-yard line. From that point on, the Ravens struggled on the offensive side of the ball. Midway through the third quarter, the Ravens trailed 43-7, … [Read more...]
