Arts events to take the gallery, Byrum Stage this fall semester

August 30, 2017 by Maria Neathery

The fall semester is underway,  which means there there will soon be many arts, theatre and music events meant to entertain all of campus.

AU employs faculty who love to teach, inspire and guide our students during chapel convocations. Chapel this semester includes speakers such as Assistant Professor of Christian Ministries Rev. Dr. Todd Faulkner. He will speak at the School of Theology and Christian Ministry in Miller Chapel on Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. Other chapel speakers include Rev. Dr. Mike Thigpen, Rev. Dr. MaryAnn Hawkins, Dr. Daniel Ippolito, Dr. Samantha Miller and many more.

The Department of Communications and Design Arts Faculty Exhibit will showcase an exhibition of current professional work by the faculty of AU’s Department of Communication and Design Arts on Sept. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. They not only bring excellence to the classroom while actively maintaining professional practices, but have widely exhibited, published and commissioned their work. This group exhibition represents the breadth of professionals who teach in the department, displaying published books, paintings, photographs, wood turned vessels and design work. You can expect to see work from faculty including David Baird, Jason Higgs, Tai Lipan, Jack Lugar and Samantha Yoo.

The Bill Gaither Vocal Band gallery, located in York Hall, will be open to the public Oct. 20 to Dec. 5. The Warner Sallman exhibit displays the authentic collection of religious depictions of Jesus right in AU’s very own Schierman Gallery. The gallery is located in York Hall and provides tours of Sallman’s paintings and creations. Both the Gaither Gallery and the Warner Sallman exhibit have weekly hours every Tuesday and Friday 1-4 p.m. Appointments can also be scheduled to view these galleries.

More gallery viewings this year include the Design and Illustration Group Invitational held in the East Gallery Nov. 3 to Dec. 5, Marc Chagall and The Bible Jan. 19 to Feb. 23, Student Juried Exhibit/Jurors Exhibit March 2 to April 6 and the Visual Communication Design Senior Exhibition April 14 to May 4. The Marc Chagall and The Bible exhibit will be a cross disciplinary between visual communication and religious studies. Marc Chagall and The Bible contains 55 etchings and lithographs of Chagall’s graphic works. This exhibition contains 10 of the 105 etchings that constitute a suite of work for Marc Chagall’s Bible (1932-39, 1952-56), an enormous project spanning 25 years.

Upcoming York Performance Hall concerts include Lee Joiner on violin and Karin Edwards on piano at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, Heaven Fan on harp joined by a guest guitarist on Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Chorale and Earlham College Choir, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. The Homecoming concert featuring the Choral Ensemble will be at Park Place Church of God on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The AU Theatre will present “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” in Byrum Hall, with showings on Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m., Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m., Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
