Breaking: Sala out as football coach

November 13, 2017 by Alec Brown

After three seasons at the helm, Anderson University Head Football Coach John Sala will not be returning. Sala led the Ravens to a 4-26 record in his time on the AU sideline.

Athletic Director Marcie Taylor confirmed that Sala will not be returning, but had no further comments at the time.

The team learned of the move in a team meeting Monday afternoon. Many were emotional upon hearing of the decision.

“I didn’t see this coming,” said Alphonso Blackwell. “It’s sad because we all had a close relationship with Coach Sala. I understand why it happened. We have to win more than four games in three years.”

Dayan Smith expressed similar sentiments. “Coach Sala is a great man,” Smith said. “But for the future, we need structure and a winning mindset to help turn the program around.”

AU has not won a conference championship since 2001 and has not had at least a .500 record since 2008. The next hire will face an uphill climb in attempting to rebuild the once proud football program.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is made available.
