Mocha Joe’s promotes campus outreach through new event coordinator

January 17, 2018 by Hannah Ader

Mocha Joe’s offers much more than just drinks and pastries. An atmosphere that provides comfort and enjoyment for many has become a place of study, work and social endeavors.

This school year, Mocha’s became connected to Chartwells, allowing the use of Raven Dollars for purchases. This seems to have encouraged a busier and livelier atmosphere. As a central spot on campus, Mocha’s is home to many different ideals.

From a nice place to study and catch up on work to the perfect spot to socialize, Mocha’s seems to hold it all.

“Mocha’s is great,” says junior Wes Busby. “I like being able to put in some headphones and really focus in on what I’m doing while still having social opportunities.”

A different atmosphere than the library, Mocha’s provides ample space for getting work done while having the opportunity to engage in conversation as well.

“Mocha’s has more of a social atmosphere this year,” says senior Kennedy Sade. “I like it because I come to meet people and be social.”

While some see Mocha’s as a place to be productive, others appreciate the communal setting.

Located next to the CAB office, Mocha’s has increased efforts to coordinate with students through events. Reaching out in new ways this year, Mocha Joe’s is often crowded and full of life.

Though Mocha’s had typically held events in the past, the marketing manager used to be the one in charge of coordinating with groups and allowing the space to be used in specific ways.

This year, an event coordinator position was created that focuses primarily on these events and social aspects. Having an event coordinator has been crucial this year as events in Mocha Joe’s have evolved.

Junior Hayes Withrow currently holds this position.

“Mocha’s now sponsors and holds various events of their own for the campus,” says Withrow. “Of course, groups are still welcome to use the space, but the goal of the event coordinator position is to hold more events on campus during the week in between CAB events.”

Events such as the gingerbread house contest and the free massages were planned by Withrow throughout the past semester.

“I went to the gingerbread house event and had a great time,” said junior Connor Sorrell. “I appreciate that Mocha’s has events in order for people to create more opportunities for community.”

Community is a big part of the AU campus, and the events that Mocha’s provides are pivotal in creating more opportunities for a comfortable and inviting environment.

Working closely with CAB, Withrow has been able to plan large events with the staff and even plan smaller ones on her own.

“The best events are when we can partner with other groups, classes or individuals on campus,” she says. “The goal is to have diverse events during the week that all people on campus can enjoy.”

This semester, Mocha Joe’s will be hosting trivia night, game night, bingo, candy grams for Valentines Day and many other events. Be sure to drop by for coffee, a study break or a communal time with friends, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for upcoming social opportunities.
