Political science professor Michael Frank received an award from Indiana 5th District U.S. Congresswoman Victoria Spartz for both his outstanding impact on Anderson University’s campus and the Indiana community on September 23rd during chapel. More specifically, he was recognized in The Congressional Record. The Congressional Record, a journal of the proceedings of Congress, is used by the Members of Congress as a way to recognize their constituents for their accomplishments, which is a high honor.
During this special chapel ceremony, Anderson University’s Provost Courtney Taylor explained why this is so important for the campus community: “This is the first time a faculty had been noticed in congressional record.” Dr. Frank receiving this award not only brings joy to the campus, but also respect for his accomplishments.
For Dr. Frank, this was an unexpected surprise. “Personally, I am humbled by being honored in this way. It was certainly unexpected. I guess it gives me some indication that I’m having a positive impact.”
Frank has worked at AU for 25 years, from teaching political science to directing the Center for Public Service honors program. According to Spartz, he helps prepare students for a life in public service careers and connects students to industry professionals, internships, and service opportunities. His students have become elected representatives themselves, going as far as to work in government offices as well as launching political campaigns in Washington, D.C. His students have also gone off to become members of Congress. Outside of the university, he has served as the chair of the Madison County Public Defender’s Board since 2009. There, he ensures that there is compliance with state guidelines for the county’s public defenders alongside the Judicial System.
Despite being recognized for his service and contribution to the Anderson community, Frank still acknowledges the hard work and love of those around him. “To the extent I’ve had an impact it’s due to the hard work of my students, the support of my colleagues, the love of my family, and the open doors God has provided,” Frank said.
Spartz concluded the celebration by saying, “His passion has touched upon the lives of so many and will continue to do so in the future.”
