On January 7 this year, an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a driver in Minneapolis. This was recorded by onlookers and agents as a large crowd of protesters gathered at the scene after the shooting. The officer fired three shots through the windshield and driver’s window of Renee Good as he filmed the car from his phone.
The officer, Jonathan Ross, is an Anderson University alum from the class of 2007 who graduated with degrees in psychology and business administration before going on to join the U.S Border Patrol in Texas. According to Katie Baker from the New York Times, he notably spoke at a “Support the Troops” event hosted by the College Republicans about his National Guard deployment to Iraq.
Good’s death has stimulated further heated debates over immigration policies in the nation, polarized by video technology, social media, and ongoing political unrest. As Good’s family and community grieve over her death, various law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are wrestling over rights to investigate Ross and Good. As of now, investigations into Ross haven’t been made, prompting the resignation of an FBI supervisor who had previously attempted to open a case.
