Lately, I’ve heard conversations about women in ministry nearly everywhere that I’ve turned. Some people are for it, and some are not. Often, when people first discover that I am a Christian ministries major, their faces tell me that they either wholeheartedly support my path or they oppose it to their very core. It seems that this path is one that is either celebrated or detested—there is no in between. There are many scriptures that people use to support their positions, and there are … [Read more...]
Food service prices rising
The cost of living is ever increasing, as are the costs of dining on AU’s campus. With those rising costs, however, have come several improvements to campus dining. Since last year, the cost of dining in the Marketplace has increased by an average of 42 percent. The highest price increase comes at breakfast, where the price rose from $5.25 last year to $7.99 this year, or by 52 percent. The cost of lunch was increased by 44 percent from $6.95 to $9.99, while dinner increased by 38 percent from … [Read more...]
1952 Andersonian celebrated fall homecoming
On Nov. 5, 1952, the Andersonian published a homecoming-recap-themed issue. As the 2016 Ravens prepare for homecoming and the official kick-off of centennial celebrations, the Andersonian looks back to nearly 64 years ago, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President, and Rowenna Dodge was crowned homecoming queen. At the time, the Andersonian was published “semi-monthly,” and it cost $1.50 to purchase a subscription for the year. The editor-in-chief was Iona Bevins, and the student … [Read more...]
Chapel introduces new worship bands
It was announced last year that there would be changes to chapel in the 2016-2017 school year, including revamping the way that chapel worship was organized. Chapel auditions this fall were set up differently than in past years, with audition times set aside for bands and individuals. The bands were then selected for a year-long rotation, rather than pieced together month-by-month as they had been previously. There are seven groups in the rotation for chapel worship this year, each with their … [Read more...]
“Andersonian” celebrates centennial by looking back
As AU celebrates its centennial year, many campus organizations and departments are looking back on their history on campus. The Andersonian, started by a group of students nearly 70 years ago, has a long history of involvement on campus. A look back to the first issue ever published, on Feb. 18, 1947, reveals a culture in many ways different than the AU of today. When the first issue of the Andersonian was published, the school was still known as Anderson College. The paper was four pages in … [Read more...]
Student gains experience with CMC program
Alaina Ellenburg, a junior entertainment and music business major at AU, knew that in order to be successful in the ever-changing entertainment business, she would need hands-on experience. That’s when she decided that she wanted to attend the Contemporary Music Center in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. “I knew that if I didn’t start intentionally learning more about the business now, I would never be ready for what future jobs require in this field,” Ellenburg said. While at the CMC this … [Read more...]
Q & A with Rev. Tamara Shelton, new campus pastor
Tamara Shelton has been involved at AU for years, as a former student, resident director, assistant dean of students and director of residence life. Now, she will serve as the campus pastor. Q: What is your vision for your new role as campus pastor at AU? A: Of course there are the job description pieces of my role, which includes planning the chapel convocation program, and I’m working with a team of people to do that. But also, I think about it in the terms of being aware of the needs on … [Read more...]
Debate team places third at national competition
Chandler Clark and Eleanor McArdle were first-time debate team members, and the only students on AU’s debate team this year, but that didn’t stop them from placing third in nationals last month. Nationals took place in Fullerton, California over spring break. There, McArdle, a sophomore psychology and marketing major, and Clark, a freshman political science and economics major, debated on the increase of federal minimum wage. There were about 20 teams in their division of competition. The duo, … [Read more...]

Students who do not have any reason to be in Decker during the … [Read more...]
Pistole comments on Apple vs. FBI controversy
In the last few weeks, Apple has taken their dispute with the federal government to the American public. The dispute is over an iPhone recovered in the San Bernardino shooting last December. Apple is refusing to follow a court order that calls for them to assist the FBI in accessing content on the phone. On Dec. 2 of last year, Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik entered the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, where they opened fire; 14 people were killed and 22 were … [Read more...]
