OCD in me: Reaching out for help in the fight

March 31, 2017 by Peyton Bennett

Some of the earliest memories I have are of me as a two or three year old asking my mom multiple times every day if I had to go get my booster shots. “Mom?” I would ask meekly. “Yeah, buddy?” my mom would reply. “Am I getting shots today?” She would sigh, and reply sweetly with, “No, buddy.” Eventually I got over my fear of shots, but I never quite got over all the fear in my life. Naturally, my worries matured with me. By middle school, I was afraid of bird flu, mad cow disease and any of … [Read more...]

Conservative doesn’t always equal Republican

March 31, 2017 by Guest Writer

By Josh Senft Conservative. You’ve likely seen this word a few hundred times on social media by now. Whether it's a word that makes you smile or cringe, Conservatism needs to be defined. Conservatism is a political ideology, at its core, centered around preserving ideas that work, reining in big government, upholding the rule of law, defending truth, promoting traditional values, fighting for fiscal responsibility and standing for life in the womb. It seeks true justice on an individual … [Read more...]

The Millenial concept is often inaccurate

March 2, 2017 by Andersonian Staff

Each generation is influenced by certain characteristics and broad swaths painted to generalize. And each time a generation comes of age into the world, the older generations set themselves apart by criticizing and nitpicking the characteristics of the new one. This is currently happening for the Millennial generation. We’ve read countless articles about the Millennial generation, mainly from the perspective of older generations. Generalizing entire groups can be enticing, as it can make a … [Read more...]

Student Government is here to serve you

March 2, 2017 by Guest Writer

By Hamilton Smith When you ask people what they love about AU, they always say the people. Victor and I take that belief to heart. We decided to run for Student Body President and Vice President because we love AU and the people that make this university what it is. For the past two years, we have served on senate. This is the legislative branch of SGA. On senate we addressed the issues we heard around campus. We confirmed new charters for clubs. We voted to accept or reject money requests for … [Read more...]

The importance of student government

February 22, 2017 by Andersonian Staff

Every election matters—even the ones on small Christian campuses like AU. That's why, when voting ensues tomorrow after chapel, it is vital for students to take part in the election process. Although it seems insignificant, involvement in student government can bring great change to campus. Voting in the general election is one of several steps that students can take to be involved in SGA. Beyond voting for the duo that will lead our student body in the 2017-18 school year, students can run … [Read more...]

Jesus is King, but the Church is rubbish

February 22, 2017 by Ryan Grondahl

There has been a phrase floating around since the inauguration of Donald Trump: “No matter who is President, Jesus is King.” This has been the cry of many evangelicals since Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton last November. While I suppose I understand the concept of Jesus being the overseer of all things, allow me be to frank—this evangelical refrain is rubbish. Now don’t get me wrong, I don't disagree with phrase as it is written. Indeed, no matter what happens on this earth—be it … [Read more...]

New Secretary of Education: DeVos or De Vil?

February 22, 2017 by Guest Writer

By Maria Neathery Recently, a huge decision in American politics upset educators across the nation. Betsy DeVos, a wealthy Republican donor, was named U.S. Secretary of Education. DeVos has almost no experience in public education. She was confirmed by the Senate, but only with the help of a historic tie-breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence after weeks of protests and two secessions within her own party. DeVos is known for devoting her money and time to charter schools and the … [Read more...]

Black History Month

February 8, 2017 by Andersonian Staff

February is the month that we celebrate Black History. We learn about important Black historical figures, attend events to celebrate black culture, and place an emphasis on Black cultural history in America. However, do we all participate? Do we give the celebration of Black history the credence that it deserves? The answer is, sadly, we do not. Because mainstream America still claims that it “does not see color.” But we’ve got that all wrong; we need to see color in order to appreciate it. We … [Read more...]

Donald Trump is not doing the work of God

February 8, 2017 by Nikki Edrington

I wasn't going to write it—people are tired of hearing about this. I'm tired of it, too. But that's precisely why I must say it. Donald Trump is not doing the work of God. No, far from it. He is doing his very best to turn America into another pawn in his rat race. Our enemies and allies alike are laughing. Trump has single-handedly given our enemies all the ammunition against us that they could ever need. I'll say it again for the people in the back: Donald Trump is not doing the work of … [Read more...]

Don’t rely on politics for change

January 26, 2017 by Andersonian Staff

Poltics are important. If you are of the voting age, you should educate yourself about the issues, the platforms, and go vote. The nation we live in is a democracy, so we should all participate in that democracy as we are able. However, as influential as the political realm may be, we cannot rely on it to create lasting change in our nations or in our world. We cannot depend on government to change peoples’ attitudes, to fight racism, or to help the poor. Why? Because government is merely one … [Read more...]
