November 15, 2017 by Christina Nesslage

In a semester-long project by the students of a creative writing poetry class, aspiring authors are creating a magazine of their own poetry. The magazine, which will be released digitally in December, is an assignment from Professor Deborah Miller-Fox, assistant professor of English. The magazine is the first one of its kind. Although Miller-Fox has given a similar assignment in a previous semester, the current class is contributing to one larger work. Each student contributes writings as … [Read more...]

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” opens in Byrum

October 18, 2017 by Christina Nesslage

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” opened on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Byrum Hall. The musical stars the original characters from Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip, from the familiar realism and wavering confidence of Charlie Brown to the bossy but well-meaning Lucy. The show delights children ages one to 100 with bright colors and a sense of child-like wonder. Translating a comic strip and its characters to the stage may seem like a challenge, but the cast and crew created a colorful and … [Read more...]

This year’s homecoming celebration is themed “Coming Home.” “This was intentional because, whether a current student or an alum of AU, this place houses and has housed many students over the years,” said Scott Tilley, director of alumni engagement and annual giving. “But it’s more than that,” he said. … [Read more...]

Social media discourse doesn’t work

September 27, 2017 by Christina Nesslage

The last year and a half has seen the worst of humanity on social media. It is not just the beliefs you post about, but also the arguments online that deteriorate real-life relationships. "How the heck can you believe that?" Each side asks the other. Good intentions of trying to inform your friends and followers of the gravity of Charlottesville (or just white supremacy in general) devolve into screaming matches that masquerade as conversation. Facebook and Twitter fights are still fights. No … [Read more...]

September 13, 2017 by Christina Nesslage

At the end of the 2016-17 academic year, changes to the meal plan structures were announced. Early responses and feedback from students this semester have been mixed, and some students are confused as to how the changes affect their campus dining habits. AU business manager Whitney Jiminez, who oversees food services, said that the biggest change to meal plans is in the introduction of the Raven Unlimited Plan, which “allows unlimited access to the Marketplace every day during open hours, and … [Read more...]
