On Nov. 5, 1952, the Andersonian published a homecoming-recap-themed issue. As the 2016 Ravens prepare for homecoming and the official kick-off of centennial celebrations, the Andersonian looks back to nearly 64 years ago, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President, and Rowenna Dodge was crowned homecoming queen. At the time, the Andersonian was published “semi-monthly,” and it cost $1.50 to purchase a subscription for the year. The editor-in-chief was Iona Bevins, and the student … [Read more...]
AU works to continue increasing enrollment
1,497—that’s the total number of traditional undergraduate students at AU this fall. Although overall enrollment is slightly down since last year, the class of 2020 is one of the biggest classes to come through AU in past years. That number, accompanied with a 77 percent retention rate for the freshman class, means the Admissions Department and the Enrollment & Marketing team have a good reason to celebrate. “The increase in the fall class is attributable to plain old hard work on the part … [Read more...]
Chapel introduces new worship bands
It was announced last year that there would be changes to chapel in the 2016-2017 school year, including revamping the way that chapel worship was organized. Chapel auditions this fall were set up differently than in past years, with audition times set aside for bands and individuals. The bands were then selected for a year-long rotation, rather than pieced together month-by-month as they had been previously. There are seven groups in the rotation for chapel worship this year, each with their … [Read more...]
A glimpse at Fall Into Dance open auditions
The nervous excitement starts to build as the dancers hear the music beginning to play. Shauna Steele, the area coordinator for dance in the School of Music at AU, instructs the performers to make a giant circle on stage behind the curtain as they await the opening of the show. “Take your energy and throw it into the circle,” she instructs. “Clear your mind and focus on the performance, but have fun.” It’s show time. This is the scene just moments before the Fall Into Dance show begins. With … [Read more...]
“Andersonian” celebrates centennial by looking back
As AU celebrates its centennial year, many campus organizations and departments are looking back on their history on campus. The Andersonian, started by a group of students nearly 70 years ago, has a long history of involvement on campus. A look back to the first issue ever published, on Feb. 18, 1947, reveals a culture in many ways different than the AU of today. When the first issue of the Andersonian was published, the school was still known as Anderson College. The paper was four pages in … [Read more...]
Campus undergoes renovations for centennial celebration
Recent renovations to AU’s campus have not gone unnoticed by students returning for another semester of classes. After more than three months of summer vacation, students arrived to a newly-paved valley and a renovated residence hall, among many more changes that together significantly improved the appearance of campus. More renovations, like those currently underway outside of Decker Hall, are to come in the near future. “[President Pistole] speaks to excellence in all things, and our campus … [Read more...]

Myers Hall reopens to house female undergraduates
For the first time since 2013, Myers Hall has opened its doors to residential living, this time exclusively for upperclassmen women. Betsy Reiff will be serving her second year as an AU R.D. in the refurbished building, having moved from the now-closed Rice Hall to the other side of campus. “I would love to see girls really claim this as a place that they love to live and make it their own,” said Reiff of Myers Hall, hoping to promote the Psalm 34:4-5 inspired dorm slogan “Be bold, be radiant, … [Read more...]

Matthew Kluft: Storyteller, Filmmaker, Christian
In the spring of 2015, Matthew and I were put in a group. Our assignment: to make a short film. I was the director and he was my editor, but he did so much more than that. Looking back, he was the constant; always there, always working and always stepping up when a position needed to be filled. When the first day of filming came, we met in the studio at around 7 a.m. Matthew was there first, as he always was. We proceeded to pack the equipment for the day and soon we were ready to … [Read more...]
